Kate Oram mentoring an athlete

One-to-One Athlete Mentoring

Your performance is supported. What about everything else?

Professional sport is full of specialists.

Coaches, agents, analysts, medical teams, psychologists and performance staff, all working to help athletes perform at their best.

But what about the things that don't fall neatly into anybody's job description?

Who helps you work out what you're going to do after sport? Who helps you develop your own profile, explore business opportunities, prepare for a career outside competition or navigate the decisions that come with being a professional athlete?

And when you're struggling with something beyond your sporting performance, do you always know where to turn?

After more than twenty years working inside professional sport, I've seen how much support surrounds athletes. I've also seen how easily important areas of their lives and careers can be overlooked.

That's where I come in. I help fill those gaps.

I offer independent, one-to-one mentoring for current and former athletes, providing practical guidance, an experienced perspective and ongoing support tailored to the individual.

What can I help you with?

You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for before we start. You might recognise yourself in some of these questions.

01

What am I going to do after sport?

Your sporting career won't last forever. But working out what comes next can be difficult, particularly when so much of your life has revolved around training and competing.

We can explore your interests, ambitions, transferable skills and career options, whether retirement is approaching or still years away.

02

How do I prepare for life after sport while I'm still competing?

There are things you can do now to create opportunities for your future.

We can look at professional development, qualifications, networking, gaining experience outside sport and building a plan that fits around your existing commitments.

03

How do I build my own profile?

You might want to develop your presence beyond your sporting achievements, establish yourself professionally or make better use of the platform your career has given you.

I can help you develop your personal brand, communicate your story and build a professional profile that reflects who you are and what you want to achieve.

04

How do I protect my reputation and personal brand?

What you share, the opportunities you accept and the way you present yourself can all affect your reputation.

We can work through how you approach social media, professional relationships, public opportunities and decisions that could influence how you're perceived.

05

How do I access commercial and business opportunities?

You might have an idea for a business, want to explore sponsorship opportunities or be interested in working with brands, speaking or media.

I can help you assess your ideas, understand what's involved, prepare your approach and identify sensible next steps.

06

How do I turn my sporting experience into a career?

Writing a CV, creating a LinkedIn profile, preparing for interviews or explaining your experience to employers outside sport can feel unfamiliar.

These are practical things we can work on together, helping you recognise and communicate the skills you've developed throughout your sporting career.

07

Who can I talk to when things aren't going to plan?

Injury, deselection, contract uncertainty, changing relationships or unexpected retirement can create challenges that extend far beyond competition.

Sometimes you need an independent person who understands professional sport, can listen without a competing agenda and help you think through your options.

08

Where do I go when I need specialist support?

You might be struggling with your mental health, facing financial or legal questions, or dealing with something you don't feel comfortable discussing within your sporting environment.

I can help you consider what kind of support you need and how to approach finding an appropriately qualified professional. My role is not to replace specialist services, but to help you navigate the options available.

09

Am I making the most of being an athlete?

Your sporting career can open doors beyond the field of play.

We can explore opportunities to build skills, develop relationships, gain experience and make the most of your position while you're still competing.

How we'll work together

There is no one-size-fits-all programme.

Every athlete has different experiences, ambitions, responsibilities and existing support.

Some people might want help preparing for retirement. Others may be focused on their personal brand, commercial opportunities or career development. Some may simply want a trusted, independent person to help them navigate unfamiliar situations.

Our work will reflect what you actually need.

  1. 1

    Your starting point

Before we meet, you'll complete a questionnaire about your sporting career, ambitions, current circumstances and the support you already have around you.

  2. 2

    Our initial consultation

We'll spend 60 minutes discussing the bigger picture, exploring where you would benefit from additional support and agreeing what we'd like to work on.

  3. 3

    Your personal development dashboard

You'll have a private online space containing your priorities, agreed actions, relevant resources and practical exercises. Your dashboard will be built around your individual circumstances rather than a standard programme.

  4. 4

    Monthly mentoring

We'll meet for 60 minutes each month to discuss progress, work through challenges, explore opportunities and decide what happens next.

  5. 5

    Support between sessions

You'll be able to message me through your dashboard with questions, updates or situations you'd like my perspective on, with responses during agreed working hours.

Where a particular project requires more extensive hands-on support, we can discuss and agree that separately.

An athlete in profile

Why work with me?

I spent more than twenty years working inside professional rugby, alongside athletes, coaches, performance teams and sporting organisations.

I understand the demands of the professional sporting environment, the opportunities it creates and the challenges that can arise both during and after an athletic career.

I also understand that athletes are individuals with ambitions, interests and responsibilities that extend far beyond their sport.

My role is to bring that experience, perspective and practical support to the areas where you need it.

I'm not here to replace your coach, agent, psychologist or any other specialist you already work with.

I'm here to help with the things that might otherwise be overlooked.

Mentoring designed around you

Because every athlete's circumstances are different, we'll agree the scope and investment following an initial conversation.

Mentoring normally includes a 60-minute monthly session, your personal development dashboard and ongoing messaging support, with an initial three-month commitment.

Let's talk
